There are many different types of couples and individuals who are in need of a gestational surrogate to build their family – from single mothers and fathers, to couples who have struggled with infertility, who are in need of a compassionate woman who is able to bring their miracle to life.

The decision to become a surrogate is not one that should be taken lightly. Carrying a pregnancy for an individual or couple who can’t bear a child of their own is a highly altruistic act and an enormous responsibility.  Only a select few find it in their hearts to take the journey.

Though the journey may be long and winding, the rewards are immeasurable.

Frequently Asked Questions about Becoming a Gestational Surrogate

Am I qualified to become a gestational surrogate?
It’s important to note the fact that not all women are eligible become gestational surrogates. Apart from desire to help build a family and a generous, compassionate spirit, some important criteria need to be met before any consideration.

You may qualify to become a Surrogate if you answer yes to the following:
I am a resident of the United States
Applicants need to legally reside in the United States. Due to unfavorable laws regarding surrogacy agreements, we are unable to accept applications from residents of Michigan, New York or Louisiana.

I am between the ages of 21-43
As with any pregnancy, the chances of risks and complications increase. Though the criteria may vary from clinic to clinic, this is the general age range which they will deem you an acceptable candidate.

I am healthy overallI do not smoke or take illegal drugs
An important factor to consider is your basic state of health. Applicants are expected the least to be medically fit and live in an environment that is stable and healthy. The state of health of the baby in the womb during pregnancy depends on the health of the Surrogate carrying the pregnancy.

I am height-weight proportionate with a BMI of 35 or less
Being overweight does not necessarily disqualify you from being a surrogate, but most IVF centers will require a BMI of 35 or less.  This is not meant to criticize or shame, but simply to ensure your physical safety, minimize complications, and optimize the chances of a successful embryo transfer and viable pregnancy.

There are numerous potential complications for overweight women including:
Lower IVF success rates
This is some text inside of a div block.
Lower embryo implantation rates
Lower response to medication used to regulate ovulation
Greater need for carefully titrated dosing of medication
Greater difficulty with embryo transfer in visualizing the uterus and accomplishing the embryo transfer effectively
If a multiple pregnancy is conceived, there are greater risks of complications

I’ve experienced a full-term pregnancy and deliveryI have a child and I’m raising (or have raised) that child
Having carried a pregnancy to term and delivered a healthy child both establishes your biological fitness to successfully carry a child and also reduces the chances of you having a maternal emotional or mental connection to any child you give birth to via surrogacy.

I am in a stable living conditionI am not on any form of public assistance
Gestational Surrogates are required to be in a stable living situation, both emotionally and financially. Pregnancy can be both emotionally and physically demanding, so it is imperative that you have the full support of your spouse/partner (or if you are single, a close family member or friend) throughout your journey. We are unable to accept applicants who are enrolled in certain government programs such as cash assistance, welfare, public housing, and Section 8 housing.  There are strict laws about reporting income when you are on government assistance and any compensation you may receive as a surrogate could disqualify you from receiving further benefits.

I do not have a history of psychiatric illness
It’s crucial for an applicant to be truthful about your mental wellness. As a surrogate, you will be required to undergo a complete psychological screening to assess your personality type and potential response to crisis and stressful situations. The MMPI, PAI, or similar psychological screening tests assess many things, including deception and certain personality markers. The psychological evaluation also provides you with an opportunity to talk with a professional and express any concerns you may have before you get pregnant.

I enjoy pregnancy and am motivated by the wish to help others create or add to their family
A clear motivation to help others is one of the most important criteria for determining the eligibility of any woman who’s applying to be a surrogate. Though you will be well compensated for the time and effort you’re putting forth, financial compensation should not be your sole desire.

The ideal candidate is an empathetic woman who can appreciate the sensitivity of a surrogacy arrangement. Surrogates must know that the happiness of a family is at stake. Only those with the best interest of baby and intended parents at heart should consider this enormous responsibility.

If you’re ready to become a part of our network of compassionate, caring women who are here to support you throughout your surrogacy journey and beyond, we encourage you to contact Windermere Baby and Family Wellness Center to become a surrogate today!
